Mazda has announced its intention to bring a diesel engine to the United States by the year 2013, specifically, as Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes explains, "It'll be here between 15 and 18 months behind the launch of the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine in the Mazda 3."1 This means that the new diesel engine will appear in the early half of 2013, due to the fact that the Skyactiv-G 3 appeared in showrooms across the United States in October 2011.
Although it has not been officially confirmed as so, it seems likely the new Mazda CX-5 will be the first U.S. diesel model on the market, as it is slated to appear around the same scheduled time. In fact, Japan and Europe's CX-5 currently holds a 2.2-liter diesel engine. As Car and Driverexplains, "The European version comes in two variants, both four-cylinders with a two-stage turbocharger, making either 150hp at 280.2 lb-ft that does 0-62mph in 10 seconds, or 175hp at 309.7 lb-ft that cuts the 0-62mph down to 9.2 seconds and tops out 3 mph faster, at 126mph. Either way, a 6-speed Skyactive-MT manual transmission comes standard, with an option for a 6-speed automatic."2.
Whether the diesel appears on the CX-5 or a different new Mazda vehicle, we at Tracy Mazda, located at 2680 Auto Plaza Dr. Tracy, CA 95304, is excited to keep you updated on the diesel engine's U.S. arrival. So, stay tuned here, readers, for more information as it becomes available.
