Generally, marketing campaigns for cars use words like “performance”, “tough”, “efficient”, “stylish”, and “value”. So we were intrigued to see Mazda’s team refer to the 2022 Mazda CX-9 as “Crafted for Connection”. Connection? We had to think a minute. Then, being the Mazda enthusiasts that we are, it hit us! In fact, we got hit four times.
Connection / Technology
Because we’re so familiar with today’s technologically sophisticated Mazdas, we first thought of “connectivity”. Our minds went to Mazda Connected Services suite that allows remote start, remote locking, remote access to vehicle status, and telematics. Naturally, we know there’s Bluetooth® phone connectivity and streaming audio, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Plus wireless phone charging. There’s even extra USB ports in the third row of seats! We thought, “Yep, that’s what Mazda means by ‘Connection’”.
Connection / Road
Then the Mazda enthusiast side took over and that’s all about the driving experience. Car And Driver magazine recently exclaimed that the Mazda CX-9 “delivers its trademark driving verve.” We had to lookup “verve” to confirm we had that one right, but we liked what we saw: “vigor and spirit or enthusiasm”. Despite being a utilitarian SUV, that’s exactly how the 2022 Mazda CX-9 connects with the road. Standard i-Activ AWD® helps predict and respond to traction loss, and the Skyactiv®-G 2.5 Turbo engine propels it effortlessly through space, with G-Vectoring Control Plus to enhance stability. In fact, Car And Driver went on to say, “The CX-9’s crisp steering and sporty cornering attitude remind us more of a sports sedan than an SUV”. (They then went on to award it the Editors’ Choice Award)! So maybe Mazda is talking about how the CX-9 offers the driver an exhilarating “connection” with the road. “Yeah, that’s it”.
Connection / Family & Friends
But all Mazda models are inspired by the brand’s connections to racing and high-performance handling. Why did they single-out the CX-9? We did some more thinking. Then it was obvious: the Mazda CX-9, with its spacious and luxurious interior, with cargo space for weekend getaways and road trip adventures is all about connecting with family and friends. The Touring Premium package even features second-row captain’s chairs, making it feel like a living room on wheels and providing easy access to the third row of seats. “Absolutely! Mazda is talking about ‘connection’ with family and friends. Why didn’t we think of this sooner?”
Connection / You
As we shook our heads in agreement, we saw a Mazda sign on the wall with Mazda’s “Feel Alive” motto. We thought, “Stop. Don’t go there. We already have three perfectly plausible explanations.” But it was too late; we were already there. Mazda uses its “KODO: Soul of Motion” design theme to inspire a deeper, more visceral connection between the driver and car. “Well, there it is: KODO is all about ‘connection’”. You could say that the goal is to surround the driver in an aesthetically pleasing, ergonomically correct environment, then allow him or her to experience the exceptional handling characteristics, so that the car and driver become connected and the overall sensation makes you feel alive. We agreed, “That’s a bit too heavy for us, but we’re not marketing folks, so that’s probably what they meant.”
And the Winner Is…
We couldn’t decide. We each had our preference, but they all made sense to us, so we called it a 4-way tie. They all win!
“I Want One!”
Understandable and the Mazda enthusiasts — while overwhelmed by the whole “connection” debate — are very clear on how to help you find just the right Mazda CX-9 for you. We’ve served Mazda shoppers throughout Northern California and we certainly hope you’ll give us the opportunity to help you.
