There have been rumors of an upcoming Mazda rotary engine for some time now, and it might soon be a reality for Manteca and Stockton drivers. Here at Tracy Mazda, we’re desperate to hear more, especially since the engine is likely to be used in the Mazda RX-Vision if that vehicle makes it to production. Here’s everything we’ve heard about this long-awaited development.

Why a Rotary Engine?

Rotary engines have a reputation for being somewhat tricky to produce, but Mazda is clearly interested in pursuing the idea. Why? Because rotary engines are incredibly fun to have beneath the hood!

Able to spin up quickly to deliver a strong output despite its light weight, the rotary engine would be a great fit with Mazda’s ability to make cars that offer impressive performance and efficiency.

The Mazda Rotary Engine

The Mazda RX-Vision concept was unveiled last fall at the Tokyo Motor Show, giving Lanthrop and Turlock drivers a look at what they might be able to expect from the next generation of the Mazda RX sports car. Mazda then announced that the production version of the Mazda RX-Vision would have rotary power.

Mazda indicated that the engine was likely to feature turbocharging technology. It appears that they were absolutely serious and that work is going ahead — the team over at Auto Evolution claims to have uncovered a patent application for a rotary engine submitted by Mazda last year.

A Revolutionized Rotary

The patent drawings are enough to get some kind of idea about how Mazda will be dealing with their rotary engine. They seem to be flipping it over to put the intake at the bottom and the exhaust at the top, with the turbocharger mounted on the exhaust outlet. This is expected to dramatically improve performance, especially throttle response. Other sources suggest that Mazda may electrify their upcoming rotary engine, thereby making it even more efficient.

Mazda has yet to confirm any of this, but we’re all eagerly awaiting official news.
