2017 Mazda RX-9

The possibility of a 2017 Mazda RX-9 launch has set the automotive rumor mill running among driving enthusiasts in Stockton and Modesto, and it’s all thanks to the Mazda RX-Vision Concept. This all-new rotary-powered sports car was shown off at the Tokyo Motor Show; and while it has not been confirmed for production, it would reinvigorate the segment by offering a sleek, low-to-the-ground model that takes rotary technology to bold new heights.

The Rotary-Power Legacy

The two-door, two-seat coupe that could become the 2017 Mazda RX-9 is described as being “Mazda’s vision for the ultimate in front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car styling.” The launch of such a model would mark 50 years since Mazda launched its first rotary-powered sports car.

Nothing has been officially announced thus far, but Mazda president and CEO Masamichi Kogai, speaking about the concept, proclaimed, “One day rotary will make a comeback. This gives form to our brand’s vision of the future. It expresses our intention to make rotary. There are many issues to overcome but we will continue our efforts. We’re working steadily. Keep your eyes on Mazda.”

Next-Generation Rotary Engine

The 2017 Mazda RX-9 would be built around a new rotary engine that promises to improve on the fuel efficiency, emissions ratings, and reliability. Mazda is playing its cards close to its chest concerning specs, but automotive experts expect the engine’s output to be significant.

R&D chief Kiyoshi Fujiwara has confirmed that turbocharging and hybrid powertrains are being considered, and indicates that a manual gearbox is the most likely transmission choice. Should this car ever be commercially produced, Stockton and Modesto drivers can expect a combination of power and fuel economy that will break new ground within the sports car segment.

Dynamic Dimensions

The RX-Vision concept car measures 4,389mm long by 1,925mm wide, with a height of 1,160mm and a wheelbase of 2,700mm. Picture a Jaguar F-Type coupe that has been significantly lowered for a sleeker, more aerodynamic exterior. It’s been built around a unique rear-wheel drive platform, so the Mazda RX-9 could cast an impressive profile.

Overall, the Mazda RX-9 is expected to perform outstandingly for Stockton and Modesto drivers if it makes it to production, all while ensuring that fuel economy and emissions remain thoroughly impressive.
