How to Check Car Oil

Check Car Oil

Do you think that your car oil levels may be low? Your vehicle’s oil is the lifeblood of your Mazda model, so you should always be sure that there is the right amount to help protect your engine’s internal moving parts. Whether you plan on sticking to the streets of Manteca or roadtripping further be sure to check your manual to know how often you may need your oil checked. Learn more about how you can check car oil levels from the service team at Tracy Mazda!

How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Start out by checking your owner’s manual for the automaker’s recommendations, as some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that do not use traditional dipsticks. If you are checking the oil manually you can follow the below steps:

  1. Make sure your vehicle is parked on even ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open up your vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any excess oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both slides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks always have a way of indicating what the proper oil level is. If the top of your oil streak is in between two marks, or within a cross-hatched area, the level is good. If it isn’t within those ranges you will need to add more oil.

When you are going to pick up more oil be sure to buy the grade that is recommended in the owner’s manual. Once you have the recommended oil you can remove the oil filler cap, then add oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you have reached the proper level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Having the right oil level is essential to your vehicle’s performance. Typically, oil changes are recommended at least twice yearly, depending on the vehicle model and how often it is driven. Oil checks should be performed at least once a month to ensure that there are no leaks and that your car has healthy oil levels for any trip around Stockton. That being said, if you notice that your car’s hood is hot to the touch or that there is steam billowing out from under the hood, schedule a service appointment as soon as possible. This could indicate an oil leak and that your engine is overheating.
