2016 Mazda CX5 RedThe re-designed prototype for a new 2018 model of the Mazda CX-5 has been spied on the streets of southern California. For drivers in Manteca and Stockton who can’t wait to hear what Mazda has in store for their new model, Tracy Mazda has our ears on the rumors and speculations. And from what we can tell, the Mazda CX-5 in 2018 will be bringing a lot to the table.

Styling Changes

The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV and is Mazda’s best-selling model. From the spy shots, the new CX-5 is sporting bold new lines and shapes. Influenced by the latest Mazda CX-9 model, Mazda’s full-size SUV, these lines have been re-proportioned to a more compact size in the prototype.

The general shape is the same as the current Mazda CX-5 but the curves are tighter and the fascia appears to be more upright. The grille sports a new version of Mazda’s 5-point grille and forgoes the horizontal bars for a deep-set mesh pattern. The end points of the grille fade into re-designed headlights that echo the Mazda CX-9’s more angular and thinner look.

There are also CX-9-inspired lines that will run from the top of the front fender and into the rear wheel well, and another that traces from the middle of the rear door and flows into the top of the tail lamp housings. These lines give the CX-5 a substantial and architectural look that establishes a commanding stance on the road.

Powertrain, Technology, and Price

Any changes to the powertrain is not as well known, but it’s speculated that revisions might be minimal. The current model with a 2.0L engine produces up to 155-hp and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.5L engine boosts it up to 184-hp and 185 lb.-ft. of torque. For the 2018 model, those numbers would most likely improve even more.

Inside, new tech features that we will most likely see could include a color head-up display and driving aids like blinds spot and lane keeping systems, in addition to a traffic sign recognition system.

The price, too, is expected to stay relatively steady. The current entry-level model starts at an MSRP of $22,675.
