The Mazda CX-9 Snags a “Best Large Utility” Award from MotorWeek

February 27th, 2017 by

2017 Mazda CX-9 SideMotorWeek has dubbed the Mazda CX-9 “Best Large Utility”! Every year, MotorWeek combs through over 150 vehicles, searching for models that stand out in terms of performance, real-world application, technology, and value. The Mazda CX-9 hits all the marks, and solidifies its position as a powerful yet efficient and practical yet elegant SUV. Look below to see where the Mazda CX-9 excels as a modern sports utility vehicle!

The Mazda CX-9 is driven by a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 T Dynamic Pressure Turbo 4-cylinder that produces 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-saving systems, such as Advanced Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing, and a SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission, work in tandem to help the CX-9 achieve the following EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings:

  • 2016 CX-9 FWD: 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway
  • 2016 CX-9 AWD: 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway

Thoughtful Features

Utilitarian yet stylish and tech-savvy, the CX-9 is a rare treat in its segment. At night or during stormy weather, keyless entry lets you open the cabin without searching for your keys, while Push Button Start powers the engine via a dash-mounted button. Power windows, power door locks with speed-sensing auto-locking, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, front-door courtesy lamps, and two 12-volt power outlets give the cabin a greater sense of security and purpose. In addition, you’ll enjoy plenty of helpful extras, such as three-zone automatic climate control, SMS text delivery and reply, and an optional Active Driving Display.

Cargo and Passenger Volume

Generous space is a mark of a worthwhile SUV – and the Mazda CX-9 comes prepared. The cabin seats seven people with the help of a 60/40-split-folding second row and a 50/50-split-folding third row. Despite its large passenger capacity, the CX-9 never feels cramped with 39.3 inches of front headroom, 39.4 inches of second-row legroom, and 40.1 inches of third-row hip room. Cargo capacity is as flexible as you need it to be; leave the third row in place for 14.4 cubic feet of space, or fold the second and third rows down for a maximum of 71.2 cubic feet.
